Sunday Spotlight: Ana Angilau

Project Title: Thinking A Lot About Life <3

Artist Statement:

Beliefs of mortality and death to be linear or controlled by a tyrannical power are fixed within cultures and religions. The series ‘Thinking A Lot About Life <3’ centers around the warmth of another perspective, which is far more encompassing and bright. My intent is challenging the absoluteness of a conditional life.

The repetition of the center focus mentions themes of how generational patterns, culture, and religion are at the center of people’s lives. The hierarchy of these systems are worshipped as idols to what is deemed worthy, righteous, and/or holy. I was raised in a strict religion with high expectations of what was right and what was wrong.

Ultimately, the process of taking these photos was an understanding of what matters most in this life—whether it be family, community, spirituality, nature, etc.
